Life in Pre-Prep

SUMMER TERM 2009

Form One

Please read on for a flavour of the work we have covered this term.  These are just a few highlights of a busy and enjoyable end of year.

Our topic this term was 'Our Local Environment' and we have been discussing houses and the materials used to build them.  We compared houses in the past to modern day and asked our parents and grandparents about the homes they grew up in.  Our work in the classroom was further enhanced by a trip to Avoncroft Museum.

In Literacy we continued to look in detail at punctuation of sentences and discover the difference between spoken and written texts.  Here are some of our stories.  We had to write about the adventures of Baby Bear's visit to the moon and tell the story in the 'first person'.

In Art one of the artists that we studied was Andy Goldsworthy and the art that he creates from using natural materials.

Here are some of our own interpretations:-

In Science we discused 'Sorting and Using' Materials'.  The investigative work looked at the use of different materials to make

the same object,; learning about the different properties of materials and sorting them according to a variety of criteria and discovering why certain materials are used for specific uses.  We designed our own material monsters.

FORM 2

In History and Geography we have been discussing holidays.

We discussed how holidays have changed over the last one hundred years, and whether anything has stayed the same.

We looked at characteristics of a seaside holiday in the past; identified different types of holiday and used maps and globes to find different holiday destinations.

Wwe compared the seaside resort of Bournemouth with a seaside resort abroad.

In Science we developed our knowledge of the different kinds of plants and animals to be found in the school grounds.

We learnt that there are different kinds of habitats, to which plants and animals have adapted.

We studied that flowering plants produce seeds and thought about what seeds might grew in to.

As well as cricket, swimming and rounders lessons this term, our pre-prep pupils have played a lot of competitive sport.  The Lower School Sports Day was followed by house matches and a swimming gala.

The Saxons were victorious in the earlier competitions but Angles fought back with some strong swimming.  During the course of the afternoon the lead swung from one house to the other, with the final result being a tie.

Our junior house captains are pictured left receiving the swimming cup from Mr Yates.
