SPRING TERM 2009

Lower School Arts Festival

The penultimate week of term saw a very busy and enjoyable few days of creative activity for Nursery, Reception and Forms

One and Two.  Monday was Art Day and the children came dressed in old clothes ready for getting messy!  As you will see

in the photos below, the Reception children decorated not only their canvas but also the playground and themselves

whilst creating some impressive Jackson Pollock inspired artwork.  Many parents have commented that their work would

sit quite happily on their wall or in a gallery as we are sure you will agree!

Over the last few weeks families have been asked to save their wooden scraps and shoeboxes and these were used to create a stunning scrap box art piece.

This was inspired by the work of Louise Nevelson.  Born in Russia but growing up in Maine, USA; Nevelson used to collect wooden scraps in her father's timberyard and glue or nail them together to make 'assemblages'.  She became famous in later life for her unique kind of sculptures made from odds, ends, scraps and junk.

The piece to the left is called 'Morning, Afternoon and Night' and was created by Reception using pipecleaners to form lots of different shapes; inspired by the work of PENCK.

Form One worked in pairs to paint their own picture inspired by Van Gough's Starry Night and Form Two produced some wonderful still life.

Eversfield Mural by 2PF.

This work was inspired by the artist Diego Rivera who became famous for his wall murals showing everyday lives of Mexican workers and Mexican children.  His work was often quite large and has decorated the walls of important buildings.

The scenes shown here are: (from top left to right) Assembly, Nursery, Games, Mr Phillips, Tennis Club, Music Room, School Crest, The Office, ICT Room, Chess Club, Form 2, Playground, Dining Room, Art Room, Library, Swimming Pool, Mr Yates' office, PE in the gym, Kitchen, Food Technology Room.

Nursery Red and Blue Group built their own sculptures based on work by David Smith, from other scraps and oddments.

Lots of little fingers made this beautiful Monet picture.   The children had fun filling up old socks and then covering them in paint

and 'splatting' them on material to make a colourful 'slap painting'.

Tuesday was Drama or 'Make a Play' Day.  With the help of Splats Entertainment the children were divided into groups mixing up

the years Reception through to Form 2 and each group prepared a scene of a performance entitled 'Bungaroo'.  The morning

was spent making props and practising and then parents were entertained by a lively and fun performance in the afternoon.

Music Day

After auditions for the Talent Show on Wednesday, the children were busy with a day of music on Thursday.

A Rhythm Machine Workshop encouraged the children to think about the way that they move, how to make different sounds and so on.  Hands, feet, sticks, plastic bottles and boomwhackers were all used to accompany different backing tracks and to make music.

Talent Show

The Eversfield's Got Talent Show on Friday provided a fitting end to a wonderful week.  The children never fail to impress us with their talents and the confidence to stand up on stage and perform.  This year's finalists included ballet, bollywood dancing, poetry, Irish dancing, singing, comedy and tap.  Well done to everyone who auditioned and took part.

Thanks go to Miss Griggs, Mrs Beech, Mrs Hammonds and all the Lower School staff for a very successful week.  Proceeds from

the Talent Contest entry fee will go to the Bethesda Project.

Saxons win House Verse and Prose Competition

This year saw the first ever House Poetry and Prose Competition at Eversfield School.

Involving the whole of the Upper School, the competition began in January with the qualifying stages, in which all pupils from Forms Three to Six chose their own poem and performed it in their English lessons in front of their teacher and peers.  These performances were judged and sixteen pupils - eight Angles and eight Saxons - went through through to the final on Thursday 27th February.

All the finalists performed fantastically, coping admirably with extracts from some demanding texts - classics Danny The Champion Of The World, The Wind In The Willows, The Hobbit and Great Expectations.   Notable among the recitals were Georgina Brownsword's narration of Pip's encounter with Magwitch and Sam Young's side-splitting rendition of 'My Dad, Your Dad'.

Year group winners were chosen by our judge, Mrs Leslie Simms, an experienced LAMDA teacher and examiner who was very impressed by all the children's confident and gutsy performances.

The winners were:

Year Three - Thomas Yearsley

Year Four - Sam Young

Year Five - Nele Roeppnack

Year Six - Georgina Brownsword

The overall winner was Sam Young (see above), whose performance Mrs Simms, echoing the thoughts of many, was "outstanding".   The House result was a close-run thing with only five points finally separating Angles and Saxons.  However, the brand new House Prose and Poetry trophy was awarded to the Saxons.  Well done, Saxons, huge congratulations to all the finalists and a big thank you to all Upper School pupils for their contributions to this memorable event.

We had fun in the snow!

Eversfield kept its doors open throughout the heavy snow in February.  As well as normal lessons, the many pupils that managed the journey did not miss out on some outdoor play - wearing their boots, gloves and hats, the children were allowed out on to the playing fields to make the most of a plentiful supply of white stuff!  Here are some pictures of the Reception class and their snowmen:

Early Years Department welcomes in the Chinese New Year of the Ox

Our Nursery and Reception years have been busy learning about Chinese New Year.  Nursery Blue made miniature ox models and tried their hand at chinese writing.  They also made red money bags to hang on their new year display, dressed up in national costume and ate some noodles.  Red group made some lovely dragons and fans.

Reception played in a chinese restaurant role play corner, complete with chopsticks, paper noodles, and menus.  They printed the chinese characters for Happy New Year, made lanterns and performed their own dragon dance.  Lily's uncle and aunty were visiting from Taiwan and had brought over some lucky red envelopes, firecracker ornaments and ox pendants to show the children.  They explained that it is a custom to hand out red envelopes with money to your children at New Year and that firecrackers are let off in the streets to scare away evil spirits.  Form One also had a talk from Mr and Mrs Lien and they had a go at writing some chinese and counting up to 10 in mandarin.

Upper school pupils went to watch Robin Hood at the Hippodrome Theatre and were able to meet members of the cast following the performance.  Here is a review written by Form 6:

“Robin Hood” at the Hippodrome was the most exciting Pantomime we’ve ever seen! It was great as it provided a mix of non-stop comedy, adventure and acrobatic action.

There was a high price on Robin Hood’s head! The hero, John Barrowman, (a heart throb for some!) rose up dramatically to open the show and was spectacular throughout the whole performance.  The devious, dark-hearted Sherriff of Nottingham was played by Peter Gallagher. His evil scheme to marry Maid Marion was a failure. She even managed to defeat him in a sword fight!

Mrs Doubtfire ( or Friar Tuck) made the audience laugh out loud as she/ he pretended to be a woman ( with bouncing “boobs”) and was asked out for a date by the Sheriff.

The highlight of the show was the joke-throwing puppet Sam and his side-kick Will Scarlett, played by Paul Zendin. Together they filled the crowd with bags of laughter. Their consistent bullying of poor audience member Chris was hilarious, especially when Chris became a human dummy and performed “Riverdance”.

The entire afternoon saw the audience captivated by the humour, intelligent technology (for Titan the Robot), gorgeous, glamorous, glittering costumes and energetic dancing.

This Pantomime was fun for all the family and definitely had the wow factor for 2009. Don’t miss it!!
