Pupils discover old toys are as good as new

As the build up to Christmas begins in earnest and children excitedly draw up their wish list of presents many parents will be wistfully thinking back to the ‘good old days’ before the age of expensive handheld games and computers.
For pupils at Eversfield Preparatory School a visit by Heritage Education based at St. John’s House Museum in Warwick proved that traditional toys and games can be just as enjoyable as the latest gadgets available in the shops today. Children in Year One aged 5 and 6 years have been learning about toys from an historical point of view during the autumn term. They have studied the difference in the materials used and how this can often indicate the age of a toy. It has encouraged them to question their parents and grandparents about the toys they used to enjoy playing with as children.
Headmaster Rob Yates agrees, “As with fashion many toys return to popularity or even remain popular many years after they were first introduced. Some of our children were surprised to find out that the train sets, dolls and spinning tops that their grandparents played with are not too different from some of their own toys. We are delighted that our pupils have been able to benefit from a hands-on learning experience using the toys and games collection of the Warwickshire Museum Service to further their understanding of this history topic.”
