The
Early Years Department
(Foundation Stage, ages 2½ - 5)
The Early Years Department comprises the Nursery and Reception classes.
The Nursery is accommodated
in a purpose-built unit with a secure play area. While the atmosphere
is informal, it is carefully structured to create the correct environment
to meet specific educational objectives - reading, writing and number
skills taught by qualified teachers and supported by classroom assistants.
Close liaison with the rest of the school ensures continuity of education, and provides access to wider teaching resources and facilities.
Children are admitted to the Nursery from the age of 2½, provided they are dry. Nursery hours may be extended by staying for lunch and a structured programme of creative and recreational activities in the afternoon.
Boys and girls normally move up to Reception in the September following their fourth birthday.
In Nursery and Reception the children have a small amount of reading and writing homework appropriate to their age and ability. All children are given a weekly library book to read and discuss at home.
