Life in Early Years

SPRING TERM 2010

NURSERY

We have welcomed new pupils to both Blue and Red group this term and they have settled in quickly.  In blue group our topic this term is nursery rhymes and traditional stories.  We have read and acted out the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and had a go at making porridge.  We took it in turns to be the nasty witch in Snow White and make our own spells.

As well as our role play area which has been the three bears' cottage, we have also set up a smaller role play area where the children can pretend to be weather presenters, using microphones and placing weather symbols on a chart.  We had lots of fun in the snow at the beginning of term and made snowmen and snow castles!

The children have been learning the approach strokes and flicks at the end of letters ready for cursive writing.  They are learning to write and recognise their own names.  They are learning through role play and imaginative play as well as following teacher-led activities.

Just before half-term we joined in a workshop at the Book Fair and we listened to a story about aborigines and learnt about their traditional instruments.  We also celebrated the Chinese New Year and welcomed James' mummy who came to talk about chinese customs.  We hung our wishes on our very own Chinese wishing tree.

RECEPTION

Many activities this term have been based around the themes of Winter and the picture books The Snowman by Raymond Briggs and Penguin Small by Mick Inkpen.  We visited the theatre to see a magical production of The Snowman which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

We have been busy sticking and making, practising our joined up handwriting and continuing to play nicely with our friends.
