Life in Pre-Prep

SPRING TERM 2010

Please read on for a flavour of some of the topics covered this term. 

Form One

Our topic in History during spring term is toys.  The children have researched toys from an historical point of view, giving them the opportunity to use pictorial evidence as well as artefacts to introduce them to the concept of chronological order and the passing of time.  We have compared toys over the past century, what they are made of and how they work.  The children surveyed their parents and grandparents to find out what toys they used to play with.  

As part of our topic we have participated in a 'hands on' workshop run by the Warwickshire Toy Museum. (see pictures below)

ICT

The children love going over to the ICT suite for computing.  They have learnt to log on and off themselves and save their work into their own folder on the network.  Form One have been using different fonts and colours, inserting objects in word.  They have also used paint software to illustrate a display on their trip to see The Snowman at the Birmingham Rep.

After half-term Form One started cookery lessons with Mrs Beech and Mrs Cannings.  The year group is split in to three small groups following either cookery, art or design and technology.  Photos to follow!

PE/Games

This term the children will experience both football and hockey.  In hockey they will concentrate on holding the stick correctly; controlling the ball with both sides of the stick; dribbling the ball; stopping and passing the ball to a partner and shooting to a goal.  Dance lessons continue with Miss Cotterill.  Form 2 pupils took part in house matches at the end of term and the winners were the Saxons.

Form Two

In ICT Form Two have become very adept at using the softease painting software as you will see below with their lovely illustrations of phenomes which have been cropping up in spelling tests.

We have been learning our times tables and the links between addition, subtraction, multiplication and division sums.  We have looked at fractions and recognising right angles in shapes.    Towards the end of term we worked on time and solving simple problems about time using the hour, half hour and quarter hour.

Our very artistic Form 2 have produced some beautiful and detailed work in Art, experimenting with drawing lines and investigating how artists have used line in their work.

Our main topic this term has been Forces and Motion, incorporating transport. To support work in the classroom Form 2 pupils visited Coventry Transport Museum.
