Life in Pre-Prep

AUTUMN TERM 2009

Form One

Please read on for a flavour of the work we have covered so far this term.  The children have adapted well to their move to Preprep.  They are increasingly independent as they come into school in the mornings and the majority are now coming into the building on their own, hanging up their coat and hat, and putting their homework and snack in the relevant boxes in the classroom. 

In maths we are learning subtraction.  The interactive board has provided a fun introduction to subtracting within 10 and 20.

In literacy we have been working hard at our cursive handwriting.

Pupils begin lessons in ICT in Form One.  They can now log on and off confidently and have been using Word, manipulating fonts and becoming more familiar with the keyboard.

In Textiles the children have learnt to thread their own needle and create basic stitches to sew different materials together.  They sketched their design first and then chose material to cut out to make up the design.

FORM 2

We have started Mental Maths and are practising mental calculation strategies.  We have started to learn how to build and remember multiplication tables. 

Many Form Two children are now having individual instrumental lessons and have really taken to their new instruments well.  We look forward to hearing their progress at future 'Musical Moments' concerts.  As a class we have started to learn the Ocarina and can now play some simple songs such as Twinkle Twinkle little star.  Some of Form 2 will be perfoming Jingle Bells at our Carols at Eversfield evening concert in December.

In ICT we have been creating some colourful pieces of work using Softease Paint software.  We designed our own stained glass windows, drawing a picture and then choosing colours to fill in the shapes.  We found out that the paint would merge with other areas if we did not close the line around each shape.   Can you the king and star in Rohaan's work below?

We also drew a line of symmetry and half a face that was then mirrored on the other side.

In History we have learnt about many famous people such as Grace Darling, Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Lord Nelson.  The children were all given a famous person to research and had to produce a picture of them and some key facts.

We have been enjoying using the new Design and Technology Room.  We have studied the work of Wassily

Kandinsky and produced our own interpretation of his work.

Form One and Form Two joined together for the Lower School Christmas Production - Christmas with the Aliens.  The story tells how a group of aliens meet some children rehearsing for their christmas play when they land on earth and are unable to take off again as their space ship has broken down.   They watch the play and learn about the story of christmas.  Here are some of the cast:-
