Life in Upper School

The following is designed to give a flavour of some of the activities the Upper School have been following during the current academic year.  The broad curriculum also includes core subjects of English and Mathematics which are taught in ability sets, history, geography, French, Latin (Forms 5&6),  Music, RE, PSHE , Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning and Choir.

Science

Form 6 have been discussing microbes - Why do we get ill?  How do we keep healthy? They also talked about how microbes can be useful such as in breadmaking and composting.  This topic was followed by talking about dissolving.

Above Alex and Nathaniel are conducting an experiment to see how temperature affects the rate at which a jelly baby will dissolve.  Other pupils used different solvents such as milk. oil and alcohol and also different coloured jelly babies to see if this had any implications.

Form 5 are discussing solids and liquids and changes of state.  In the lesson above they are talking about evaporation.  In their experiment they saw steam rising from hot water and then condensing on the side of the beaker and cling film as it cooled down.

Mrs Alcock also gave Upper School pupils the opportunity to carry out their own research and project work.  Some ideas included discovering which material makes the bounciest ball and what shape make the best paper aeroplane.

Food Technology

Lots of mouthwatering smells have been wafting from the Food Technology Room since September!  Form 6 have been cooking food from around the world:- Moroccan salad, Italian pizza wheels, English raspberry scones and cheese muffins from New Zealand.

Form 4 have followed dinosaur-themed receipes, including dino dung bites, dino snaps, ammonite whirls, dino eye pies and dinco chocolate pillows - otherwise known as choc chip biscuits, shortbread, cheese scones, cherry pies and chocolate muffins!

Spring Term has seen a move to football, and currently we are playing cricket and rounders and have started swimming again.
