Expérience française à Eversfield

Pupils at Eversfield had a taste of all things French recently as part of a special ‘French Day’. Children and teachers dressed in the colours of the French Flag and took part in a variety of themed activities.

Lower school pupils built an Eiffel Tower from newspaper, sang French songs and rhymes and painted their own pictures using pointillism - a style used by the French Post-Impressionist painter George Seurat. They learnt about Louille Braille and Napoléon Bonaparte, making a replica black bicorne hat, along with French geography and not forgetting a game of boules on the playing fields. Upper school children were treated to an interactive lesson covering Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, they took part in science experiments inspired by French inventors such as Antoine Lavoisier, the French chemist who discovered oxygen in 1775, as well as participating in a French scavenger hunt using the internet and testing their French facts in a quiz at the end of the day.

Madame Hall who is originally from Nice, South France and has been teaching at Eversfield for 10 years, commented, “At Eversfield, I teach children from the age of 4 years upwards so there is a wide range of abilities within the school. Each year our Form 6 pupils have the opportunity to go to Normandy and stay in a château, taking part in outward bound activities and using their language skills in the local market and on day trips. The idea behind our French Day was to give all our pupils the chance to celebrate French culture and to learn more about the country and its people. This involved the whole school, including our nursery children. It is equally as important and interesting for the children to hear about our famous writers, inventors, landmarks and customs as well as knowing how to speak the French language.”

Happy smiles of success at Eversfield

Congratulations to this year’s Form 6 pupils on their excellent results. The percentage of the class gaining scholarships to leading senior schools has increased steadily over the last three years. In the recent 11+ examinations an impressive nine scholarships were awarded to a year group of just twenty children.

Music scholars Sophie Tran (music scholarship St. Martins School, academic scholarship King Edward VI High School for Girls, Edgbaston High School, Solihull School and St. Martins School) and Jacob Arnold (exhibition offer from Bromsgrove School) started in Eversfield’s nursery, whilst classmates Tom Hasson-Doggrell (scholarship offer from Bromsgrove School) and Vishal Sriram (scholarship offer from Solihull School) are two of this year’s scholars who joined Eversfield at the age of 8 and 9 years old.

Head Girl Lydia Jones-Brown (scholarship offer from St. Martin’s School) is the second Eversfield girl to be awarded a sports scholarship in recent years. She has been playing netball regularly for Eversfield and captained the team who achieved a top three placing at the recent Netball Skills Tournament in Solihull, against some much larger squads.

All children achieved a place at a school of their choice and we wish all our leavers continued success in their future schools.

Eversfield keeps opposition in check

Eversfield Preparatory School has won the title “Best School” in the Under 10 category at the recent Warwickshire Junior Chess Championships held on Saturday 6th March.

Ten-year-old Henry Burston played particularly well and was placed joint second in his age group. Henry first started playing chess with his dad and then joined the chess club at school when he was six years old. “I think it is a good game and I like having to think of different strategies,” says Henry.

Also scoring well, fellow classmate Thomas Curley (10) who has only been playing for just over a year, achieved a leading score and won a silver medal.

In total, around 65 children competed in the Under 10 category, playing six games each and scoring points depending on the outcome. Along with Henry and Thomas, the other pupils representing Eversfield and helping them to be the Under 10 Leading School, were Daniel Buxton (10), Kesar Hunjan (9) and James McClure (9).

Headmaster, Robert Yates, comments: “We are very proud of this latest achievement. Chess is proving to be a very popular club at Eversfield and children as young as five are able to join in this lunchtime activity. Six-year-old Henry Crowther was another Eversfield pupil competing on Saturday who found it an enjoyable challenge. It is great that our pupils have been able to have the experience of playing competitively as well as for fun. I’m sure their success will inspire some of our budding young players.”
