School Life
Early Years (Nursery and Reception)
(Foundation Stage, ages 2¾- 5)
The Early Years Department comprises the Nursery and Reception classes.
While the atmosphere is informal, the children work in small groups and learn through purposeful, practical activities, which are carefully planned to meet specific learning objectives. The curriculum is broad and balanced with a good foundation in early reading, writing and numeracy skills.
The Early Years Department is integrated with the rest of the school which ensures continuity of education, provides access to wider teaching resources, facilities and specialist teachers.
The Nursery is accommodated in a purpose-built unit with its own secure outdoor play area. Children are admitted to the Nursery from the term in which they turn 3 years old, provided they are toilet trained. Nursery hours may be extended by staying for lunch and a structured programme of creative and physical activities in the afternoon.
Boys and girls normally move up to Reception in the September following their fourth birthday.
In Nursery and Reception the children have a small amount of reading and writing homework appropriate to their age and ability. All children are given a weekly library book to read and discuss at home.
