Eversfield U11 Michaelmas Rugby Festival

On Wednesday 19th September Eversfield held their annual Michaelmas Rugby Festival for the sixth year. A total of four teams took part in the competition with Eversfield hosting King Henry VIII, Bablake and The Croft. Although the weather was dry, there was a blustery wind which could only result in some interesting play.

Eversfield’s first match was against King Henry’s. From the start it was evident that the home team were stronger when tackling and created tremendous pressure in defence, enabling them to push the opposing team back and turn the ball on a number of occasions. Playing a team consisting of physically larger and faster players proved to be a huge advantage allowing Eversfield to control periods of play and ending comfortable winners.

The Croft had won the trophy for the last three consecutive years and they were Eversfield’s next opponents. Starting with some excellent possession, power and determination Eversfield sought to break through The Croft’s defensive line. However, as the defensive line narrowed The Croft took advantage and using the space on the wings scored just before the end of the first half. Another score early in the second half left the home team behind at 2-0, which they closed quickly bringing the score to 2-1. During the last part of the game The Croft continued to make good use of the wings, scoring twice and resulting in a final score of 4-1. A tough loss, but a marvellous game from both teams.

The final game was against Bablake during which Eversfield controlled play for significant periods of time with successful use of the wings and ball play. This combined with the power of some team players and the speed of others made for another comfortable victory.

Congratulations to The Croft who took the trophy for the fourth year on the trot!

Two wins and only one loss was a very pleasing outcome. The tournament highlighted the standard that this team can achieve, but also the areas that need improvement. Mr Sliney was very pleased by the boys’ play, their work ethic and commitment and is looking forward to the forthcoming season.
