Official Opening of the John Shaw Sports and Performing Arts Centre
The Official Opening of the John Shaw Sports and Performing Arts Centre by The Right Reverend David Urquhart Bishop of Birmingham
On Tuesday 3rd May the Right Reverend David Urquhart Bishop of Birmingham visited School to officially open and bless the new John Shaw Sports and Performing Arts Centre. The centre includes a 20 metre indoor heated swimming pool and a multipurpose hall with a large viewing area. Although the hall is used for a wide range of sporting activities on a daily basis, full use was made of the performing arts facilities on this occasion including staging for the school choir and retractable seating for the visiting guests.
Bishop David was met at front of School by the Head Prefects and Mr Yates, who then introduced him to members of the governing body including Mr John Shaw who had been a driving force throughout the building project and after whom the centre is named.
At the entrance to the new building he also had the opportunity to meet those who had been involved in the construction of the building and representatives of the ESA and Raindrop Committee who had helped to raise funds in support of the project.
During the official opening ceremony Bishop David read a prayer that he had written especially for the occasion and unveiled a plaque commemorating the event.
Gracious and loving God,
You give us gifts of rest and recreation to refresh and inspire us. We pray that this new Sports and Performing Arts Centre will be a place where spirits are renewed, and minds and bodies are strengthened. We thank you for those whose skills, expertise and generosity have made this building possible, and we pray for all who meet here to use these facilities. May your peace and blessing rest on this place, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
The ceremony was also attended by members of the Founder’s family, Mr Cyril Denney, who were visiting School for the first time in many years.
