U9 and U11 Rugby Teams play in the regional rounds of the National Schools Rugby Tournament
On Sunday 20th November Eversfield's U9 and U11 rugby teams took part in the North and Midlands Regional Rounds of the National Schools Rugby Tournament hoping to win a place in the finals.
For the U9 boys this was their first taste of a tournament of this calibre and they faced stiff competition from schools who have historically dominated the event. Their first game was against QEGS of Wakefield and despite some anxious moments the final score was a draw. A morale boosting victory was gained from their second match against Gayfield. St Faith’s proved to be too strong an opposition in the boys’ third match and the team failed to secure a win. Going into the final game the team knew that they needed to beat King's College to give them a chance of qualifying; they duly pulled together and won the match. The final score sheets showed Eversfield sitting in a very credible third place, only five points behind the group winners. This was not enough to earn a place in the finals, but it did wet the boys’ appetite for the tournament and they are already looking forward to next year.
The U11 boys had reached the finals of the tournament last year and were desperate for the opportunity to compete again. Their first match against QEGS of Wakefield consisted of two evenly matched teams battling it out, with most of the play taking place in the centre of the pitch. QEGS broke first to score a try, but Eversfield rallied, equalised, and almost snatched a late winner. The final score was 1-1. In their next match the boys played very well against Crackley Hall. They scored 6 tries securing 3 bonus points. The final game against Bilton Grange was most certainly a ‘game of two halves’. Bilton Grange enjoyed most of the territory in the first half and led by a try at half time. Eversfield rallied as the teams came back on to play, dominating the game. They succeeded in scoring an equaliser, but despite several attempts failed to improve on their try count; the final score was 1-1. At the end of the afternoon the group’s score sheets proved how closely matched the teams were with QEGS, Bilton Grange and Eversfield all winning and drawing exactly the same number of games. Bonus points awarded to QEGS increased their total and they were guaranteed a place in the finals. Bilton Grange and Eversfield were still neck and neck in their points tally, but as ‘second placed’ teams they also proceed through to the next round.
The National Schools Rugby Tournament Finals will take place at Epsom College on Sunday 19th March, 2017. We wish the team the very best of luck!
