SUMMER TERM 2010

UPPER SCHOOL PRODUCTION - GREASE

Our very own Danny (Oliver Taylor) and Sandy (Lydia Jones-Brown)

Our upper school pupils have been working extremely hard this week, school by day and on stage by night!  Tonight is the final peformance of Grease the musical but we are sure the children's high spirits will carry them through to the end of term.  They have clearly enjoyed this year's show and the audience can't help but sing and bop along too.  What wonderful talent and enthusiasm - well done everyone!  Thanks to all pupils, parents and staff for their support.  Much goes on behind the scenes such as the work of our tireless costume makers who have this year also been involved in many costume changes during the performance itself - thank you Mrs Stansfield, Mrs McCormack and Mrs Beaumont-Dark.

OPEN AFTERNOON

Our annual open afternoon for parents, families and friends took place on 19 June.  The afternoon began with a concert by the Lower School including performances by the beginners strings group and Form 2 ocarina groups.

Following the concert a presentation was made to John Platt of the Birmingham City Mission by Lydia Jones-Brown, Head Girl.  An amazing £6,000 has been raised during the year for the BCM, our chosen school charity for 2009-2010.  Mr Platt was overwhelmed and thanked everyone for their generous support.

The children changed into their Caribbean inspired outfits for fun on the field - accompanied by a steel band there was the limbo, coconut shy, swimming, cricket, assault course, bbq, bouncy castles, trampolines and much more!  Thank you to Mrs Scott and the kitchen staff for the lovely cream teas, to Miss Griggs, Miss Murphy, Miss Freeman and the Lower School staff for a wonderful concert, the ESA for organising activites on the field and to everyone who helped to make it such an enjoyable day.

Green Day

Another first for Eversfield - 'Green Day' devised by the school council, was a great day of fundraising for the Birmingham City Mission, combined with activities to increase environmental awareness.

The day began with two assemblies:-

Firstly Warwickshire Park Ranger Tracy Jones gave a thought provoking talk to lower school pupils about how nocturnal animals can get trapped in dropped litter and that we should all take responsibility for ensuring that our environment is kept clean and tidy.

This was followed by a presentation by Shilpa of Oxfam who was invited by Luke Doshi-Keeble (Form 4 school council rep) to give a talk to upper school pupils about climate change.

Go Green badges proved popular with all the children and teachers - a brilliant idea suggested by Hana Bashir (Form 3 rep) who sourced them herself and then sold them to pupils for £1.

Throughout the day pupils took part in an environmental treasure hunt organised by Lydia Jones-Brown and Sophie Tran (Form 6 school council reps).

A school-wide recycling project challenged forms to compete against each other to devise and make the most innovative model out of recyclable materials.  The prize was 'golden-time' or extra play-time so there was a lot at stake!

The winners were 5GH for their future city and runners up were 6SA for their recycled tree.  In the Lower School 2PF who made teddy bear chairs were the winners.  Mr Yates was impressed that they had chosen to make something functional and were popular with the saxon and angles mascots!

With fingers crossed and a few prayers said, the rain held off during the afternoon to allow pupils to walk around the playing fields and school grounds to raise money for our school charity this year - the Birmingham City Mission.

Congratulations to everyone as many laps were completed and we eagerly await the final sum raised in sponsorship - thank you to all parents and extended families and friends who supported us.

French Day

Our first French Day was held this term involving all the children from Nursery through to Form 6.  Everyone came dressed in the colours of the French flag and took part in a full day of activities.

There were lots of Eiffel Tower creations but the winners had to be Reception for their teamwork in creating the largest of all:-

Mr Hastings taught Form 5 about the writer Jules Verne and pupils were taken on an underwater journey exploring the story 20,000 Leagues under the sea:

Eversfieldran its own restaurant and shop:

Nursery children painted their own version of Claude Monet's water lilies and played outside with their own water-lily pond!  They also ate croissants and brioche accompanied by chocolate milk.

Form 5 enjoy field studies trip to Preston Montford

Our Form 5 pupils have now returned from a rather wet week in Shropshire.  The weather however did not dampen the excitement of being away from home for 3 nights!  The children took part in pond dipping and examining their finds under the microscope, hiking, a river study at Long Mynd, a visit to Ironbridge Gorge Museum and lots of team building activities.  Here are some photos from the week:-

Lots of games to entertain and to tire everyone out ready for a good night's sleep!

Volcanic ash cloud brings Eversfield together with American friends

As news breaks of further disruption to flights over the UK due to a new volcanic ash cloud, we are hoping to welcome home our last few pupils that have been stranded overseas.  Fortunately we started the term with a full complement of staff but there were a number of pupils unable to return from their holiday left stranded in various parts of the globe.  One particular family who have three children at Eversfield found their holiday change quite unexpectedly when they were unable to return from a holiday in Florida.  Oscar, Tom and Jamie travelled up to Cincinnati with their family as their father was able to work out of local offices.  Anxious about missing too much school they temporarily enrolled at a local school in Kentucky.

On Friday thanks to help from Angela Spencer, Principal at White's Tower Elementary School and the IT skills of our own Mr Genders we set up Eversfield's first overseas video link and were able to bring Oscar and Tom together with some of their friends back at school.  It was a nice surprise for Tom who was celebrating his 7th birthday the same day.

As you can see below we were able to see each other quite clearly.  Eversfield pupils were able to speak to Oscar and Tom as well as ask and answer questions with pupils at White Tower's Elementary.  Undoubtedly this experience will be the start of an exciting future for pupils at Eversfield.  With the international pupils that we already have attending the school it opens up opportunities to keep in contact in a much more interactive way and we would certainly like to keep in touch with our new friends in the States.

View from White's Tower Elementary School, Kentucky:-

Miss Shipley's Reception class was affected quite a bit by the volcanic ash cloud as many of the children were on holiday and unable to return home in time for school.  There have been plenty of discussions about volcanoes and looking at the world map to see where friends were stranded.  Here they are making their very own volcano complete with explosions!
