Cool Classics

Supporting their Latin and classics studies Form 5 enjoyed getting hands-on with the rare Roman archaeological finds at the Roman Alcester Heritage Centre and discovering what life was like there in Roman times. They sorted and examined genuine Roman artefacts and scrutinised a wide variety of objects including the largest collection of Samian ware in the country, and a talk from a Roman soldier introduced them to the Latin names for Roman armour and equipment.

Latin is invisibly thread through modern-day English and learning Latin doesn’t just strengthen literacy skills in English, it lifts all academic outcomes. It advances Maths and science problem-solving abilities, provides the foundation for learning other modern foreign languages, fosters clear, logical thinking for computer science and opens children’s eyes to the wonders of classical civilisation.
