House Music 2020: Musical Showcase of Talent

Today we had the privilege of holding a COVID-19 special House Music Competition. It was an afternoon of mixed emotions. We were glad we could stage the competition, but sad that our whole community could not come together to experience the showcase of exceptional talent.

Eversfield is a musically talented school and the difficult task of deciding the winner of the competition sat with our adjudicator Mr Christian Daswon, a professional concert pianist and accompanist based in London. In demand as a vocal accompanist, Christian also works regularly with the Berkshire Youth Choir and Berkshire Young Voices.

Announcing Angles as the winner of House Music Competition 2020, Mr Dawson praised all of the soloists on their performances and particularly commended Reuben on his drumming, noted how both Prèma and Finlay captivated the audience with their vocal solos, and applauded Aidan on his ability to lead the piano accompaniment played by Mr Biggs.

Almost 80 children auditioned for the event and just six soloists from each year group, three Angles and three Saxons, qualified to represent their House. Mr Biggs devised a format for the afternoon that would support the social distancing measures and allow all soloists to perform for their year groups – offering them the opportunity to enjoy the live performances.   

The afternoon programme included all styles of musical genres and took us on a dazzling tour of the World from the deep American south, across to the Caribbean, to the stages of Broadway, the Highlands of Scotland and even the famous Cavern Club birthplace of The Beatles.  

This year sadly we were not able to come together as House Choirs but Forms 1 and 2 came to the rescue with their pre-recorded performance reminding us to smile with their renditions of ‘Put on a Smile’ which was shared with all form groups.
